WHAT IS TITLE I?

Title I funds are provided to eligible districts and schools to provide supplementary educational help to students. Title I staff members are paid through a federal grant and provide small group academic help to students, in addition to core instruction from the classroom teacher. 

The State of New Hampshire has presented challenging academic standards for each grade level, and all students should work toward meeting these high standards. In our SAU29 schools we provide additional Title 1 support during the elementary years, when children must gain a solid foundation in reading, writing, and math for future academic success.

Children in our "targeted assistance" schools receive Title I supplemental support based on a variety of eligibility information, including assessments, classroom teacher recommendation, and a child's ability to benefit from a small group learning situation.

Children in our two "school wide" Title I schools, Franklin and Wheelock, may receive Title I supplemental, based on data, in a small group setting; yet all children may receive services in these schools on a very flexible basis.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN "TARGETED ASSISTANCE" AND "SCHOOL WIDE"

All schools receiving federal Title I funds must use those funds to help children to meet challenging state standards through instruction that is SUPPLEMENTAL to the core. All Title I schools seek to include parents/guardians in conversations about their child's education. The difference between the two models is more about WHO may be served, not about HOW services are provided.

 

Most of the schools in SAU29 are targeted assistance Title I schools, inclusive of FullerJonathan DanielsSymondsChesterfieldHarrisville,NelsonMarlow, and WestmorelandFranklin and Wheelock are school wide schools, having met a 40% low income threshold as schools, and having submitted and received approval for a comprehensive Title I school wide plan.

TITLE I AND PARENT INVOLVEMENT

You are your child's first and most important teacher!

 

Research has unquestionably proven the point that when parents are involved in their child's education, students demonstrate better academic achievement, school attendance and greater self-esteem.

 

How can you get involved?

  • Talk to your child's classroom teacher. If you have questions about your child's progress, the classroom teacher is your first and best resource. If you would like to know more about the when and what of your child's supplemental Title I instruction, certainly contact your child's Title I educator.
     
  • Find out about what your child is learning to meet grade-level standards. Ask about "I Can" statements for your child's grade level.
     
  • Talk to your child about school, and made space and time for homework.
     
  • Attend a Title I parent event, to learn more about your school's Title I program, about at-home activities to benefit your child, and to provide your thoughts about how Title I grant funds should be used to best support our students.

Title I Parent Involvement Policy 2015-2016

PARENT INVOLVEMENT IS A CRITICAL FACTOR IN CHILDREN’S SCHOOL ACHIEVEMENT.  MARLOW 

SCHOOL DISTRICT’S POLICY WAS DEVELOPED IN COLLABORATION WITH TITLE I PARENTS, STAFF, AND 

ADMINISTRATION. IT WILL BE DISTRIBUTED VIA ANNUAL MEETINGS.

 

Our Title I DISTRICTS commit to involving parents in the following ways.

 

 Parents will be invited to review this policy annually through parent involvement events and through 

feedback on the parent questionnaire.  Title I staff will solicit parental input in the development of the 

Title I Plan, in program evaluation, and in school improvement efforts through like means. 

 District administration and Title I team will seek ways to build school and parental capacity for 

involvement.  Administration, Title I staff, and parents will seek ways to integrate Title I parental 

involvement strategies with other programs and offer technical and advisory assistance.

Our Title I SCHOOLS commit to involving parents in the schools in the following ways. 

 A child’s classroom teacher (TAS) will make the initial contact in a timely manner to parents regarding a 

child’s participation in Title I.  At this time information will be shared about the results of a particular 

student’s assessment and the content of the supplemental program in which their child will be 

participating. This will happen PRIOR to the mailing referenced below.

 Title I teachers will send home a Title I informational brochure, permission, compact.  (TAS, permission 

and compact.  SW – newsletter).

 Title I teachers will be available for parent conferences upon request and with the classroom teacher’s 

input and/or participation.  Title I teachers will be flexible in regard to meeting times and available via 

phone and school district e-mail to clarify information 

 Each Title I school will hold an annual meeting with at least the following agenda items:

  1. information regarding the Title I program and specific supplementary resources used

  2. how a child becomes eligible 

  3. when, where, and how often a child meets with a Title I teacher, and how a child exits, both TAS and 

    SW)  

  4. information on parental rights from the project manager, inclusive of parents’ right to know 

    document.  

  5. information and suggestions on how to help children achieve 

 Title I staff will inform parents of meetings via a written invitation and as time allows, via a phone call.  

Children may be allowed to attend and activities made available for them.  Title I staff may assist in 

carpooling arrangements or an alternative means of communication if a parent cannot attend a meeting 

because of transportation. 

 Title I staff will send home three Title I-specific progress reports each school year (TAS). Progress 

reports will include suggestions on ways parents can help children achieve.

 Title I staff will continue the Books-in-a-Bag and math games program to assist parents in activities 

which will help children achieve.  Additional parental involvement meetings geared toward meeting the 

expressed needs of the parents with regard to their student’s academic development and skills may be 

scheduled also.
